A Window of Hope: The Camel Glass Charity Trek for Children’s Hospice Southwest

In an extraordinary display of determination and solidarity, the Camel Glass team embarked on a unique journey along the Southwest Coast Path, not just to challenge themselves but to shine a light on a cause that touches hearts deeply—the Children’s Hospice Southwest. This wasn’t your ordinary trek. The team, comprising Mat Jones (Managing Director), Giles Wright (Storeman), and Darren Tucker (Surveyor), carried a PVC window frame throughout the 100-mile journey. This symbolic gesture represented the window of hope and support they aimed to provide for the children and families cared for by the hospice.

The Journey Begins

Setting off from Camel Glass’s Barnstaple branch on the 24th of March, the team was fueled by a blend of excitement and a sense of purpose. The path they chose is renowned for its breathtaking views and formidable challenges, a fitting metaphor for the journey families embark upon when they are supported by the Children’s Hospice Southwest.

Day 1 –  Barnstaple To Bideford

The trek from Barnstaple to Bideford offered a relatively gentle introduction to the days ahead. The path, tracing the serene beauty of the Taw Estuary, provided a scenic backdrop that was both uplifting and contemplative. This leg of the journey allowed the team to adjust to the rhythm of the walk and the unique challenge of navigating with the PVC window frame in tow. It was a time for reflection on the importance of their mission and the impact of the funds and awareness they aimed to raise.

The journey to Bideford was as much about building a deeper connection with each other as it was about covering the miles. The shared purpose brought the team closer, turning colleagues into comrades united by a common goal. Their conversation flowed from personal stories to shared ambitions and reflections on the importance of the work done by Children’s Hospice Southwest. This leg of the trek was a poignant reminder of the strength found in unity and the difference a dedicated group can make when driven by a heartfelt cause.

The team completed the first leg reaching Bideford By mid-evening where the team spent the night at the Hartland Quay Hotel who stepped up as a beacon of generosity and support by offering a room free of charge to the team!

Day 2- Hartland Quay to Bude

The second day of the Camel Glass charity trek was a pivotal moment in the journey. As the team set out from Hartland Quay to Bude, a stretch known for its rugged beauty and challenging paths, they were joined by a new face – Steven Wright from the Barnstaple branch. This addition to the team not only brought fresh energy but also symbolized the collective spirit of Camel Glass, rallying together for a cause that extends far beyond the confines of their day-to-day work.

The trek from Hartland Quay to Bude is renowned among walkers for its breathtaking landscapes, steep climbs, and the relentless pounding of the Atlantic Ocean against the cliffs. The path to Bude brought its share of challenges – sudden inclines, narrow paths, and the unpredictable weather of the Cornish coast. Yet, with each step, the team’s resolve only strengthened. Encounters with fellow walkers and locals along the way provided opportunities to share the purpose of their journey, spreading awareness about Children’s Hospice Southwest and the critical support it offers. These interactions were not just moments of rest but sparks of connection, binding the community closer in support of a shared cause.

This leg was particularly challenging due to the unrelenting weather. Despite the adversity, the team’s spirits remained unbreakable, showcasing their dedication and resilience. This day promised not just a continuation of their physical journey along the stunning Cornish coast but also a deepening of their collective resolve to make a significant impact for Children’s Hospice Southwest.

The trek from Bude to Trebarwith is renowned for its striking coastal scenery, featuring dramatic cliffs, secluded valleys, and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. However, the beauty of this landscape is matched by its challenges; steep ascents and descents test the resolve of even the most seasoned walkers. For the Camel Glass team, each step was a testament to their determination, not just to conquer the physical path but to carry their message of hope and support for the hospice with every mile covered.

As the team navigated the demanding terrain, they encountered moments that tested their stamina and spirit. Yet, with each obstacle, their resolve only grew stronger, bolstered by the support they offered each other and the encouragement they received from supporters following their journey. These moments of trial were interspersed with instances of awe, as the natural beauty of the Cornish coast provided a breathtaking backdrop that reminded them of the beauty in the challenge and the purpose that propelled them forward.

After the demanding journey from Bude to Trebarwith, a significant highlight for the Camel Glass team was the prospect of a well-earned rest. On this night, unlike the others, the team had the comfort of sleeping in their own beds.
